A murder that was not premeditated is considered manslaughter. There are three types of manslaughter.
Voluntary manslaughter charges are considered when a murder occurs upon a sudden fight. These are often murders that occur in the "heat of passion." A person convicted of voluntary manslaughter may face up to 11 years in prison.
Involuntary manslaughter charges are often brought when a person is killed by the negligent act of another, but was not an intended victim. A person convicted of voluntary manslaughter may face up to four years in prison.
Vehicular manslaughter charges are often considered when a driver kills another person with a motor vehicle as a result of the driver's negligence. This not only refers to cars and trucks, but also vehicles like boats.
Depending on the circumstances, a defendant charged with vehicular manslaughter may face up to 10 years in prison.
