Four types of restraining orders are available in California: domestic violence restraining orders; civil harassment restraining orders; elder or dependent adult abuse restraining orders and workplace violence restraining orders.
A domestic violence restraining order can be sought by someone who has been abused by another person they have a close relationship with, such as a spouse, partner, ex or someone they are related to.
A civil harassment restraining order can be sought if a person is harassed by another who is not close to them.
An elder or dependent adult protective order can be sought by someone who is 65 or older or a person between the ages of 18 and 64 who has certain disabilities and are a victim or physical or financial abuse, neglect, abandonment, or physical or mental abuse.
The fourth type, a workplace violence restraining order can be sought if by an employer who wants to protect an employee who has suffered violence or the threat of violence at the workplace. It can not be sought by the employee.
