The "Three-Strikes" law was intended to significantly increase the prison sentences of persons previously convicted of a violent or serious felony.
Additionally, it limits the ability of the person to receive alternative punishments other than prison time.
Prior violent and serious offenses that qualify under the "Three Strikes" law include, but are not limited to murder, robbery, rape, other sexual offenses, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. If one is convicted under the "Three Strike" law, they could potentially be sentenced to 25 years to life in jail.
The goal behind the "Three-Strikes" laws is to keep repeat offenders off the streets.
